Aleppo Soap

Born in the fortress of Aleppo in Syria about 2,000 years ago, this soap is possibly at the origin of the first hard soaps in the world.

The soap is made from 4 simple ingredients: Olive and Laurel Berry oils, Soda Ash (derived from sea salt) and water. It contains no palm oil, preservatives, colouring, synthetic fragrances or animal fat derivatives.

It is highly beneficial for those with skin conditions such as acne, eczema, rosacea or psoriasis

Our soaps are made by a Syrian soap master and his family. The soap factories are located in France, as well as the northwestern coast of Syria, where they grow their own olive groves in the mountains. The laurel berries that are used in their soaps are harvested from Slenfeh, Wadi al Haiat and other surrounding villages.

Given the current situation in Syria, they have moved part of the soap production to France, and continue to travel back and forth between the two countries for their trade.

The way of production has remained unchanged through time. Our Aleppo soaps are hand-crafted by a Syrian soap master who has acquired his skills of soap-making from the generations before him. Each bar requires around the curing of 9-12 months before it is ready for use.

Handmade from freshly pressed Olives and Laurel Berries

Each year the soap is manufactured during the dry winter months of November to March. Olives are collected from their family farm and freshly pressed into oil, before being mixed with soda ash from seasalt and left to cook in huge cauldrons. The saponification (a process that produces soap) produces a rich creamy green paste: soap. Laurel berry oil is then added, enhancing the soap with its active ingredients - essential fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins. It is this ingredient that sets this soap apart from other soaps.

Three days later, the soap that has been cooled will be cut into individual bars, stamped by hand and stacked to dry and mature in the sun. The whole curing process will take a minimum of 9 months.

During this drying process, the soap gradually hardens and its color changes from olive green to a beautiful deep gold. The colour the soap acquires depends mostly on the amount of laurel oil the bar has.

We have 2 types of soaps in different laurel berry oil concentrations:

Aleppo Soap with 20% Laurel: Suitable for all skin types, including young children and pets. Made in Syria

Aleppo Soap with 40% Laurel: Suitable for those with skin conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. Made in France with organic cold-pressed olive oil

Benefits

- Moisturizing, with a luxurious creamy texture when wet

- pH balanced and gentle for use on all skin types. After each use, your skin will feel refreshed and well cleansed.

- Antibacterial and purifying. Great for cleansing of acne-prone skin

- Soothes redness and itchy/sensitive skin conditions

- Anti-itch scalp treatment. Its high oil content ensures that the scalp is well nourished and cleansed of impurities.

- Rich in vitamins and anti-oxidants. Olive oil is very rich in vitamin E and polyphenole, which is an anti-oxidant that delays the effects of ageing while laurel bay oil has antiseptic properties.

- Brightens and tones overall complexion

Each bar can last for 3 months with daily use on face and body.

For a better lather, soak the soap bar in water for 1 minute and it will start to release sticky strands of soap. Rub directly onto the skin to enjoy the effects of its natural oil composition. Be careful to avoid getting the soap into your eyes as it can sting!

Light and soft scent of the bay laurel plant.
