Tradition of Marseille Soaps (Savon de Marseille)

For more than a thousand years, the French city of Marseille has been producing natural Olive Oil soap, known as Savon de Marseille. This was due to an abundance of olive oil, coconut oil and salt sourced from the Camargue region as well as the French colonies - which make up the ingredients of this gentle soap.

By French law, a genuine Marseille soap must contain 72% Olive Oil with no animal or fragrance additives. It is widely used in French households to clean anything from laundry to kitchen surfaces.

The process:

1) The cooking

This is a hot process soap where the ingredients are cooked in a huge cauldron for days before it is washed clean with sea water, thus removing all soda ash (added to allow saponification of the ingredients to create soap) traces.

2) Purification and cooling

The mixture is poured in cooling vats for 2 days and washed again with clean spring water to ensure purity. It is then poured onto the specialised floor moulds and left to cool slowly, aided by the Mistral Wind: a strong northern wind in the southeast of France.

3) Cutting and stamping

Once dried, the soap is then cut up into bars and cubes, and stacked on wooden shelves. The individual cubes are also stamped with the characteristic Marseille soap trademark.

Body bar: For daily use on face and body. Massage bar directly onto wet hands and skin. Keep the bar dry between each use.

Stain Remover: Wet the stain with cold water and rub the soap directly onto the spot. Leave it to absorb for a few hours. Lather it up with some water and wash off. Machine wash after if necessary.

Laundry: Shave the soap into flakes and feed it directly into the detergent container. Wash as per normal. It will leave a soft scent characteristic of the Marseille soap.

Dishwashing: This soap is a natural de-greaser, and can effectively remove traces of oil and leftover food stains. Unlike commercial dishwashing liquids, this soap will not dry out your hands after a long round of washing.
